General Motors Recall Information
The General Motors recall includes almost 7 million vehicles that were sold since 2003. There are several types of defects that have been identified that prompted the recall:
GM Ignition Switch Recall
This defect was identified that can cause the vehicle to switch from the “ON” position to the “OFF” position during normal operation, causing the steering, brakes, and airbags to malfunction and potentially cause an accident.
This defect was identified in up to 2.6 million vehicles, including:
- 2005 – 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
- 2006 – 2011 Chevrolet HHR
- 2003 – 2007 Saturn Ion
- 2007 – 2010 Saturn Sky
- 2005 – 2007 Pontiac G5
- 2006 – 2010 Pontiac Solstice
The GM ignition switch defect is dangerous and has the potential to lead to serious motor vehicle accidents. There have been numerous accidents and 13 motorist fatalities reported as a result of the defect, which has prompted a congressional investigation into General Motors’ knowledge of the defect prior to the recall.
In addition to the ignition switch recall, General Motors has also recalled millions of vehicles due to defective power steering, airbags, and axles.
General Motors Recall Lawsuits
Information has become available that GM knew about the defect as early as 2001 and failed to take the proper steps to address the safety issue. Lawsuits are being files across the US alleging that inaction by General Motors may have led to serious accidents and deaths for some individuals. Other lawsuits have been filed to seek compensation for the loss of value in these vehicles, the cost of repairs that were incurred, and other costs associated with the defective vehicles.
